The Astrolabe: Taker of the Stars

The Astrolabe: Taker of the Stars

The astrolabe, a foundational astronomical instrument refined across the Islamic world, once guided celestial observation, timekeeping, and navigation but has largely disappeared from contemporary life.

This thesis revisits the astrolabe’s historical and scientific significance, tracing its cultural development across civilization while examining its anatomy and functions.

The research is presented as a 25 x 25 cm digitally illustrated, interactive artist book that translates complex historical and technical information into an accessible visual format. The publication combines handcrafted production and sequential illustrations in a style that blends semi-realism with comic-influenced techniques.

By integrating hand-crafted production with interactive elements, the publication encourages readers to explore and assemble information.

The project positions graphic design and illustration as interpretive frameworks, transforming the astrolabe into an experiential learning system.
