Fijiri – فجيري

Visually Translating Pearl Diving Music

This thesis explores Fijiri, the traditional music of Qatari pearl divers, by translating its rhythms, instruments, and vocal patterns into a system of graphic notation.

Historically transmitted through live performance rather than written scores, Fijiri relies on voice, percussion, and collective rhythm, and has become less accessible as pearl diving declined.

This project reinterprets Fijiri through visual symbols derived from instruments such as the tabl, mirwas, and hand clapping, capturing rhythm, intensity, and sonic character. These elements form a visual language that reflects the structure and expression of performance, presented within an interactive digital interface where users can arrange symbols to generate visual and sonic compositions.

By transforming performance into a participatory scoring system, the project proposes a contemporary way to experience and reinterpret Fijiri through design, sound, and interaction.
