Comma

A Third Place for Introverted Women in the Gulf

Comma is a third place designed for introverted women in the Gulf, responding to overstimulation and social fatigue in public environments. It rethinks visibility by allowing users to control how they engage, withdraw, and exist within shared space.

Inspired by the comma as a moment of pause rather than an end, the project creates layered thresholds, soft transitions, and sensory-controlled environments. Through tactile materials, muted contrasts, and fluid circulation, the space supports introversion rather than attempting to change it.

Comma offers a way to remain present in public space while having the option to pause, recharge, and return.

Figures and space share the same material, blurring the boundary between user and environment to reinforce the idea of blending in.

A material investigation through layering—where different textures and components are composed to understand how spaces guide behavior.

Movement exists without pressure—activity becomes personal rather than performative.

Enclosed within warmth and texture, the space reduces exposure—supporting quiet presence over interaction.

Developed alongside IDES 491, this chair extends the Comma concept to the body scale—supporting pause through soft enclosure and controlled exposure.

The space uses layering to create comfort—giving users control over how exposed or withdrawn they want to be.

A continuous spatial loop that avoids dead ends, allowing users to navigate without confrontation or pressure.

The comma emerges through iteration—testing how form can hold both movement and stillness.

A controlled workspace where visibility is softened, allowing focus without exposure.

Circulation is not direct, but layered—slowing movement and creating moments of pause between spaces.
