Sovereign of Honour

Presented as part of Before Noticing: An Imagined Pavilion for Qatar, this chair was conceived to replace European seating in the formal majlis—a direct assertion that Qatari interiors deserve furniture that speaks to their own heritage.

Every element is drawn from the Gulf: the armrest and backrest curves follow the line of the Arabian sword (al-saif); the spiral-twist frame carving replicates the rope of the Iqal headband; the hanging silk tassels reference the Iqal’s own tassels; the pierced rosette medallions are taken from gypsum fretwork (al-naqsh al-jissi) found above traditional Qatari doorways. The teak carries Qatar’s building history — dhow construction, doors, and architectural joinery. The damask traces back to Damascus.

To sit here is to occupy something already loaded with expectation.
